My Journey . Tracing My Roots (Part 5)

 

The third generation of the Omarian family are my grandchildren and Tok Haji Wan Omar and Tok Hajjah Wan Zaharah’ s great grandchildren. If arwah pak and mak were still arrive they would now be addressed as tok nek. Tok haji Wan Omar died before anyone of his great grandchildren was born. 12 of the 20 great children were born before March 2017, the date that Tok hajjah passed away. The eldest of the 20 was born in 2010 and the youngest was born in 2019 ( as of December 2020)  Insha Allah the numbers will increase . 

 

I don't know what the  future holds. Only Allah swt knows.  My hope and prayers is that I  be given time by Allah swt to witness their nurturing years for many more years to come. Insha Allah.

 

My hope is that one day your parents/siblings will show you this blog in the hope that you will know  a little bit of your roots. Just a bit of history as a reminder of the journey of your ancestors. 

The third generation of the Omarian clan  are the 11^thgeneration of your ancestor Wan Long Bendahara. Bendahara is the title of the court official in the Kedah Sultanate who served as the Prime Minister. He was the key advisor to the Sultan. He served the sultan during the years 1706-1770.This post was passed down to his son Wan Johan and then to his grandson Wan Sidek bin Wan Johan. After the death of Wan Sidek, the post was left vacant. 100 years later it was reestablished by the Sultan of Kedah, Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’azam Shah. But the title and functions of the posts were reviewed and bestowed to members of the royal family. And also, to note that besides the post of Bendahara, the posts of Laksamana (Admiral) and Temenggong (Minister of Home Affairs) were also held by the Wan family of Kedah.  So, if you have a chance to read a copy the book Mengenal Asal Usul dan Salasilah keluarga that was compiled by you late great grandfather, you will discover a very complex web of family trees that are interrelated. I have simplified them by focusing on the lineage of your parents right up to the Wan Long Bendahara.

Ada yang berpendapat apa yang hendak dibangga dengan asal keturunan dan apa yang hendak dibangga dengan nama Wan itu. Boleh jadi pendapat ini betul. Tetapi apa yang kita hendak cuba mencari ialah siapakah nenek moyang kita.

It is not his intention nor mine to glorify the past but more of to understand the journey of the past. One day If you take some time to do a bit of reflection of yourself and your journey, perhaps you would like to ponder and maybe discover a bit of your ancestors in yourself. The DNAs that you carry in your blood may still bear some resemblance to that of your ancestors.  You may bear some resemblance in the physical aspects or perhaps you may bear some resemblance to that warrior side of your ancestors!!

 

To Aqil Sidqi bin Mohd Ali Mirza, you are the most senior amongst your cousins! And it is the family tradition that the eldest of the family clan (the third generation of the Omarian clan) has an unwritten duty to look out for the rest of your junior cousins. You may well be the cousin that they will seek for advice and opinions in matters relating to family matters. As you grow into your adulthood, you will notice your parents do have certain rituals/traditions that they do as part of the big family. And when your turn comes to take over, you may want to carry on with those traditions. 

And remember, to all the third generation and future generations, being genetically related doesn’t make you family. Love, support , trust, sacrifice, honesty, protection , acceptance, security , compromise, gratitude , respect and loyalty is what makes you family. 

Remember, to know is to love.

My Journey Tracing My Roots (Part 4)

 

Alhamdulliah.Still continuing on my journey of tracing my roots. Part 4 is dedicated to the second generation of the Omarian Family . The current number stands  at a total of 34. And since all the Omarian of the first generation ( the 7 females)  are past their productive age, I do not foresee an increase in the numbers. Unless of course if the 2 male members decide to take on a new family( i.e., additional branch to their  current family tree!)

 

In term of age range , the eldest is now 39 years of age and the youngest member is 15. Most of the senior members have tied the knot and are now nurturing their own family tree. Alhamdullilah, they are a closely knit second generation. My hope is that this bond and tradition will continue once the first generation are no longer around. My hope is that the seniors will keep a look out on the juniors. Sekali sekala tu tanya tanyalah khabar . Keep in touch. Yang mana yang ada lebih rezeki tu jika ada sedara yang memerlukan, hulur la bantuan. Seelok-eloknya charity begins at home ya. Itu yang dituntut dalam ajaran agama kita. Dan sekiranya masa dan ruang peluang mengizinkan, berkumpul lah , kekalkan tradisi berkumpul dipagi raya Syawal. And the important agenda is what to eat! Jangan lupa ya, itu resminya Omarian. Bila nak berkumpul, perkara yang pertama yang difikirkan ialah apa nak makan? Itu tema / topik wajib! 

Bercakap tentang menu makan, I am sure you all have your favourite food moments ya. And I sure these favourite foods will be passed down to the next generation ( the third generation  and so on , Insha Allah).

 

Remember your favourite dish from Wa Wan Hanisah , her kari ikan and kuzi ayam  just like Tok Hajah used to make? How about Pak Ngah Wan Zakwan's cucuq udang and his kari kambing? And Mak Lang wan Zakiah sambal ayam pedas haw haw and her nasi carrot.  Atam Wan Zahidah  may not be around too often to contribute with her hasil tangan, but every time she is down from Kuantan, she will never forget to bring Tanjung Lumpur’s delicious keropok keping! Teh Wan Fatimah ‘s delicious deserts and her pies! Tizah Wan Azizah's soto and her fiery sambal kicap. Pa Man Wan Abd Aziz , though quite a distance from us in KL, but every time we are back in Alor Star, remember the dining table  is never without our favourite murtabak Kuala Sungai, mee goreng Hamid, dadih , pulut udang, tepung talam mak ungku etc etc! And Cik Pa Wan Rufaidah , though a very busy civil servant like the rest of us civil servants, never fail to have a dish prepared for the occasion.  Cu Wan Amal Hayati is now trying out traditional recipes once prepared by Tok Hajjah . Soon, we will be getting deliveries from her dapur, the homemade le mongkiang, dadih and  tok hajah’s bengkang susu  and maybe a few more in the near future. 

 

There is so much more that I would like to share with the clan . Insha Allah, if Allah permits, soon. I welcome feedbacks from my anak buah. Any episodes that you wish to share don’t hesitate to share with mak lang. I will try to publish all of them on this blog, Insha Allah.

 

So here’s a brief outline of the profiles of the second generation.Notice that many have moved away from the first generation's career  paths whereby almost all except for Pak Ngah and Teh  are / were in the civil service.That was the mindset of the older generations. Job security, the pension scheme amongst others were the pulling factors . But now, the young generation is breaking away from that norm. I can count the numbers that are in the civil service.indeed very few in numbers! Alhamdullilah. You all have come this far. You are all successful in all your respective fields. Rezeki itu daripada Allah swt. Kekalkan diatas landasan yang betul  Insha Allah  yang pastinya segala yang baiknya   datang daripada Allah swt.

 I am sorry I am not able to get all  the information from all the first generation  during this time of upload. But feel free to share with me on your updates and I will upload asap.
