The self diagnose

20.6.2021

The self diagnose

Lately, it has been happening at an increased rate, quite frequent.  Just as soon as I stepped out from the bathroom, I couldn’t recall whether I have done my ablution . My mind kept casting doubts as to whether I have washed myself / done the wuduk in order to perform my prayers. Then its always back to the washroom once again to repeat the ritual.

Auzubillah Minashaitan Nirajeem (أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ). “I Seek Refuge with Allah from the Accursed Shaitan”.

Is it because my mind was  so preoccupied  that I do things automatically. Only then to question myself  whether I have done or not?

Am at the stage where the short term memory is now slowly eroding? Short -term memory loss on my plate? The common term – forgetful ?

It is a fact acknowledged  by the medical profession that short term memory loss  is a normal part of getting old for many people. But it can also be a sign of a deeper problem, such as dementia, a brain injury, or a mental health issue

It is said that when a person experiences short-term memory loss, he or she can remember incidents from 20 years ago but is fuzzy on the details of things that happened 20 minutes prior. Well this so true in me.

And I can recall now that my late mother  in her later years before she passed on, used to relate to us her childhood memories , of things she had done and so forth. But the next thing, we would all be  tearing the whole house down looking for her misplaced pair of glasses which she could  not recall at all. Later in the years she became quite delusional in that she would be telling us some one is at the door to see her. That a particular person is coming to see her . And every time  she said that we would be brushing it off. Initially we were quite concern over  this  issue. But after a while it became a routine that we accepted it as part of her new self. My late mother was diagnosed with dementia. I think she was given some medication to slow down her  from further deterioration .

It is a fact that different parts of the brain handle the different stages of memory. Short-term memory primarily takes place in the frontal lobe of the cerebral cortex. Then the information makes a stopover in the hippocampus. A 2014 study published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that a small number of neurons in the hippocampus may hold the memories of recent events. Exposure to a particular face becomes linked to these neurons, which fire when the memory is recalled.  The memories are then transferred to the areas of the cerebral cortex involved in language and perception for permanent storage. Sounds complex is it?

The long term remedy ( medical approach )

An article that I read online mentioned that when testing for any type of memory loss, a doctor will take a medical history and perhaps ask a few questions to test a patient's memory.

Other exams may include cognitive testing to check the patient's mental status and ability to think. The doctor may also order blood tests to check for various conditions including vitamin B-12 deficiency and thyroid disease.

Depending on the results, other tests may include an MRI or CT scan of the head and an EEG to measure electrical activity in the brain. A cerebral angiography may also be ordered to examine blood flow to the brain.

If the cause of the short-term memory is related to a psychological trauma, a therapist or psychologist may be consulted.

The do it at home remedy  (The brain game)

One of the most common suggestions for a better short-term memory is to use mnemonics.

A mnemonic is a tool that helps us remember certain facts or large amounts of information. They can come in the form of a song, rhyme, acronym, image, phrase, or sentence. Mnemonics help us remember facts and are particularly useful when the order of things is important. There are many websites out there that give very good information on the various strategies used  by using the mnemonics.

The brain game is one activity that I am currently immersed in. There are many word games in the Apple store ranging from simple to very complex level. I find  it  most challenging to do the word formation and also to help me  brush up on my spelling .  I find doing the Sudoku is quite a stressful activity. It requires deep concentration. I get stressed out easily if I do not get the thing right.

It is interesting to note on the early symptoms of dementia:

  • memory problems, particularly remembering recent events.
  • increasing confusion.
  • reduced concentration.
  • personality or behaviour changes.
  • apathy and withdrawal or depression.
  • loss of ability to do everyday tasks.

Should I be concern?

I found this website that has a self-assessment  questionnaire/ quiz  for people who is concern about memory loss.  It is a 10 questions assessment that  relate to life experiences common among people who have been diagnosed with dementia, a neurocognitive disorder, and are based on criteria in the DSM-5 (OCD).

How Accurate Is It?

This quiz is NOT a diagnostic tool. Mental health disorders can only be diagnosed by licensed healthcare professionals.

This website  believes assessments can be a valuable first step toward getting treatment. All too often people stop short of seeking help out of fear their concerns aren’t legitimate or severe enough to warrant professional intervention.

So, Where do I stand based on these simple questions?

1.Do you ever forget information that you have learned recently?

The hôspital appointment once again

18.6.2021

The hospital appointment once again

I started off quite early. First, I needed to get the blood sample done . Normally I would make an earlier trip to get the blood sampling done. But for today  I chose to do it on the same day. Arrived at around 9.30 am. After all the formalities of registering .(Twice, first with the hospital’s apps and second with the official MY Sejahtera apps) Quite a hassle really. I don’t understand why there is a need for double registration. At the end of the day, what use are all this data to the relevant bodies?

Anyway I had  double masked myself . The medical mask and then a cloth mask which my daughter made for me. I don’t actually look forward to these visits. Because every time I attended one such visit, I will always succumbed to body aches and fever and it would last for a few days.

Well today, the clinic was packed with patients. The nurse on duty will only allow entrance about half an hour before time. I suppose they need to regulate the number of people in the clinic. But the clinic was already full to almost maximum capacity. There were no seats available. For the first 30 minutes, I stood quite close to the registration counter. After 5 minutes of registration I was called for the weighing in. The scale registered  a loss of about 4 kg.

Then it was back to the opposite end of the counter. Hoping against hope  someone would vacate her/his seat. But alas nothing happened. Then after about 30 minutes, the girl next to me decided to move out. Immediately I took over her seat with a sigh of relief. I anticipated a long wait for the blood sampling . The number on the screen was 538 and mine was 551! Definitely going to be a long wait indeed.

Eventually my number was called to room 20. The nurse on duty commented she could not locate any  visible veins on the usual spot ( the inside of the left arm  elbow)  Must be due to the cold. So the next place would be on my  knuckle  next to the middle finger. I don’t like it when blood drawn out from this spot because I could feel the sharpness pf the pierced needle hitting the bones. Anyway, she was a very experienced person. It was over very quickly. And back to  stand and lean against the wall once again.

Soon, my number was called once again to room no 2. This time to see the actual doctor. I was pleasantly greeted by a young doctor. Very nice bedside manners I’d reckon. I told him about my inflamed tonsils. He went on to give explanation on this perpetual recurrent.

Then after the 15 minutes session, and registering for the next appointment. I stopped at the surgery clinic to make an appointment / follow up after my bio image  appointment next month.

Then the last stop at the ground  level pharmacy at the north wing of the hospital.  Now once again , it was standing room crowd. No signs of empty seats to be expected. Quite difficult to abide  to the social distancing . This time it was a very long wait. By then I was feeling very exhausted. I

My mind kept giving reminders- next time bring your own mobile  stool/ chair.

Finally , my number was called. The time on my watch read 12.20 pm.  It had been  a long morning. I told myself I need to stop at the hospital canteen and grab a plate of rice. Was expecting my husband to be waiting for me at one of the tables. But no table in sight at all. The food kiosk were opened but no dine in allowed. So it was straight up to the 5thlevel car park.

So it was straight home . The traffic was quite heavy. Many cars on the road. What MCO?

Anyway last stop at the local bakery supply shop. Bought a few stuffs for Asyiqin. She is now into baking. That is another story to tell soon.

Straight up to shower and change. Both of us finished yesterday’s leftovers. All eventually washed  with a mug of coffee and within half an hour , I was dead to the world. The much needed afternoon nap to recuperate and recharge.

Now it’s a waiting game once again. Will it, won’t I?

10.6.2021

The vaccination.

12.45 pm

Left home with husband to head towards IDCC Shah Alam. Traffic was ok. The GPS messaged to expect a 34 minute journey to the centre. Traffic was smooth. There were cars on the road but manageable. The journey took us  through the Duke Highway.

Cleared the Subang toll. And was stopped by a young army guy on duty .Took out my phone to flash him the appointment details. He acknowledge and waved his hands to allow exit.

From the toll to the vaccination centre in Section 15 was about 6km away, about 5 mins drive.

1.38 pm

Arrived at the centre. Was not too sure of the actual place. Husband decided to park the car at a spot just outside the entrance. A minute later to be  informed by the guard on duty that we could drive up to the 6th level of the building, The vaccination centre will be on the 7Th floor.

Arrived at the  6th level. There were many parked cars. Took a spot at the 6B area. Walked to the entrance

A long line of people were in queue . The first check-up. Scanned the entrance permit

Was ushered by the guards to a row of seats just outside the hall. There was already a group sitting down to wait for instructions.

The  waiting group was instructed to leave and we were told to take our seats. It was about 5 mins later that we were instructed to move to the hall entrance. But again another stop at the entrance area. Were told to take a seat. The volunteers on duty started to distribute forms. We were told to not put down our signature. I looked at the form. It was similar to the one I received on 1.6 when I wanted to try my luck to get vaccination on the same day as my husband at the Mitec but was subsequently rejected due to the difference in the type of vaccination. His was Pfizer while this shot at IDCC will be of the AZ type. Took out my pen to fill in the relevant details leaving the signature column empty. A slip indicating the number was stapled to the main form. Mine read 0915

Was instructed to enter the hall  and proceed to station one. Waited for the number to be called.

My number was called.. the first station checked on the details, the ID , phone number . I was told to tab on the first dosage to confirm once again.

Then to station no 2 to see the doctor in charge. There were about 20 tables. It was at random. Any person vacating the seat will be replaced by the next person. I was interviewed by a young lady doctor. The usual string of questions. Any  major illness, any allergy to any medications. It was a quick interview. The next instruction was to go to station  no 3 for the vaccination.

Arrived at the station and was immediately called by the nurse on duty. Once again to scan my details. She took out the bottle, showed me the amount, I think about 5 ml in quantity.  A procedure to ensure the public that the right amount was given. A quick shot and it was over. My watch recorded the time at 2.38 pm

Was told to move to station No 4 to wait for the next course of instructions. There were about 5 tables. The numbers were called out at random, depending which ones get processed . It was quite a wait. Soon my number was called, about 15 minutes later. I was given a card ,to bring to the centre for the second jab. To check on the MS apps for the next date. To expect a 12 weeks wait. Maybe earlier . was then instructed to move to station no 5 to sit for 15 minutes but since the waiting  at station No 4 was about 15 minutes we decided to skip the station. But was advised to sit in for about 10 to 15 minutes or so.

Moved to station no 5. There was a video on play. It was about what to expect for the after effect of the jabs. I decided to record the short clip. After 5 minutes we took our leave. Again the final check by the volunteers to ensure that everything was in order.

Stopped at a stall outside the hall. Bought a bottle of hand sanitiser, to replenish the empty bottles at home. The next stall was a young gentlemen selling the Japanese Udon . Decided to buy two cups to take home. Then stopped at the photo booth to record the event. A photo shoot – I have been vaccinated. Then the final stop at the Nestle booth to receive free gifts from the company- a box of Milo drink and 2 packets of Maggie mee  Cili kampung flavour, (a new flavour introduced on the market)

Stopped once again at a roadside stall on the  road out. Bought 2 kebabs. The clock was already 4.11 pm. Needed to rush home for the zohor prayers.

Arrived home at about 4.20 pm. Immediately  went straight up to the bath room to shower and change into fresh clothes.

After prayers it was finally lunch time. Had the Udon and a cup of coffee. Went straight to bed to lie down.

Received a call from son in Cardiff. Talked for  awhile . Then I dozed off , dead to the world. No after effects so far. Switched on the diffuser, dropped  a few drops of lavender essential oils and  I lost consciousness. .

11.6.2021

3.45 a.m

For the first time  in many nights, I slept through the night. Was awoken with a slight pain at the jab area, That was about 3.45 am on the 11.6.2021

Started to feel the chills. Performed my sunnah prayers. Feeling feverish . The temperature read 36.7C . Just a slight warm actually.

A slight throb on the right side of the head. Not intense. Am contemplating whether to take the paracetamol but will wait out in a little while.

5.14 am

Finished my jottings. Will wait out before the next steps,

6.10 am

Took in 2 Panadol soluble  after a light breakfast of chicken floss on dry toast.  The body temperature is starting to rise. Feeling the chills

7.30 am

Temperature back to normal. The chills are gone , so is the lingering headache.

2.25 pm

Another dose of paracetamol. Put on socks and jacket to keep warmth plus doble layer blankets

10.30 pm

Another dose of Panadol. The chills and headache is on.

12.6.2021

Still not too good. Wanted to take in another dose of paracetamol but dear husband thinks I should take a mug of hot water to ease the chills. Drank 2 mugs and off to sleep after a breakfast of poached egg on dry toast.

Off and on . Woke up to perform prayers. Water felt extra cold.  After prayers its back to bed . This time with a heavier and thicker blanket Headache is still bad.

6.15 pm

Woke up to the alarm. Late asar  today. Headache is cleared. Alhamdullilah. Shukur Ya Allah atas nikmat yang Engkau kurniakan. The fever has subsided. Went down for dinner prepared by chef Syiqin. Couldn’t finish the rice. Everything still tasted bland. Instead grabbed a chocolate cookie that Asyiqin made last week. Felt a lot better with a mug of hot coffee.

13.6.2021

Alhamdullilah. The headache has cleared and the fever is gone. Blue skies and everything nice once again.

But not so soon. The advice that I read on the monitor at station 5 was to self-monitor for the 30 days for drastic changes in the  body health. Insyaa ALLah.

My appointment was at 2.30 pm. By 2.38pm I had already had my vaccination! The whole process was fast and smooth. The staff were very professional in their jobs. Each complementing the other, great teamwork.  Salute and a big thank you to all!

10.6.2021

25th May 2021- 7 Jun 2021. That was the initial lockdown period for MCO 3.0. And it’s already the 10th today!

Is it truly over ?

Well looking at the daily reports from the National Security Unit ( Majlis Keselamatan Negara) the daily big numbers is most alarming indeed.

What happened to us ya? where did we go wrong?  From clusters based pandemics to widespread community pandemics!

As of 9.6.2021, the MKN reported 6,239 new cases with 75 new deaths, 905 in the ICU and 453 on life support machine.

What happen really?  Whom do we point our fingers to? The policy makers or is it just us?

With all sorts of theories regarding this virus circulating in the social media. With all sorts of excuses from us to cross  borders inter district  and inter state . I read in the news 200,000 people managed to travel home during the Eid celebration. How did they do that?

With  the social media circulating news on certain elites , the double standard treatments given to certain groups of people, the ‘unfair’ treatment perceived by the people  that is imposed on us the non-elites. The exhaustive instructions on the different  states of lockdown is all too much to take in. PKP,PPKP,PKPB . What are the differences? Can anyone give a few key points to differentiate all these 3 terms? Is any more terms that I have missed out?

Personally I am exhausted toeing the line. Staying home . I try to play my part. #Kitajagakita

#stayhomestaysafe. But how many are toeing the line? How many out there still made it to their grandchildren’s home 40 km away? How do we know that they are not the silent carriers of the new variant? How many out there are getting away not following the SOP?

Selfish and self-centred , not caring that their decisions affect others. Their own convenience is all that matters.
