4 kati or 4 kilo

Ever since i was young and from the time i could recall,it has always been the number 4. Back then it was 4 kati. Mak would always use the term 4 kati. Being a large family, sometimes, most of the times i think, we would squabble over the last piece of the biskut krim krakers, or the last strand of beehoon on the plate. and mak without fail would always say her famous words to quote " besok mak beli 4 kati or besok mak masak 4 kati."

So now, after many many more years later, i am stuck with that particular number, as far as cooking or food is concern. Its like 4 kilos( no more katis) of beef or 4 kilos of fish or what ever. So, 4 kilos is like a lot. More than 4 katis, cos 600 gms is equivalent to 1 kati, so i kilo is almost 1.4 kati.

But anyway, the day before Ramadan, at almost 4 pm in the afternoon, i embarked on a sambal lengkong ( serunding ikan ) making session. Knowing that making serunding is a tedious process, i still had to do it. Without fail, every year i would normally prepare either 4 kilos of fish of 4 kilos of beef serunding. But this year, the last few days of Syaaban had been most testing and tiring ever.

Today is day 3 of Ramadan, and 2 kilos of the sambal is consumed. A little bit here, a liitle bit there , from 2 full tupperware full, down to a 3/4 full . What do I do now. Embark on another serunding making session ? Ehmm.....

Another 4 kilo?
